Fashion: Dark Pony Couture

In 2009 I started my handmade fashion business Dark Pony Designs (later rebranded as Dark Pony Couture) with $25, an ancient sewing machine, and a dream of being a fashion designer. I launched my shop on Etsy (a very different platform from the one it is today) a start-up for makers back in the early 2000s. What began as a vintage resale shop quickly transitioned to upcycling and customizing thrifted garments. I taught myself to sew, I became an expert in profitable e-commerce and soon Dark Pony became a thriving and sustainable made-to-order fashion business. I was lucky enough to cater to international customers and receive recognition through the Etsy platform and its newsletter campaign features.

My love of clothes, modeling, and thousands of hours religiously reading fashion magazines proved to be valuable as a designer. This passion combined with my art education and problem-solving skills are what made this business a reality. That, and the undying belief that it is possible to make something out of nothing with enough hard work. I had the good fortune and amazing privilege to work with so many creatives along the way. Photoshoots, fashion shows, fittings, and press opportunities brought some amazing talent together. These magical times were documented in lookbooks and Etsy listings.

After 12 whirlwind years, I officially closed the Dark Pony Couture Etsy shop in 2022. Fashion and the art of sewing are important to me as a creative person. The lessons I learned and the real-life business skills I earned will always stay with me.
